autoconf bug...

Hello,

I'm reporting this bug as requested. I'm sure you'll need more info, so 
just ask. Here's what i can think of:

building: transcode-0.6.10
Mac OS X version: 10.2.6
gcc version: 3.1
make version: 3.79
autoconf version: 2.57
