The manual says of AC_PATH_X (emphasis added):
If either method is successful, set the shell variables
`x_includes' and `x_libraries' to their locations, *unless they
are
in directories the compiler searches by default*.
On my Fedora 9 x86_64 system, I've noted that x_libraries is getting set
to /usr/lib64. As this is a directory that the linker searches by
default, I would have expected x_libraries to be empty.
