I just ran a grep for all occurrences of AC_TRY_EVAL outside of aclocal.m4,
and the only places it cropped up - among the (almost 5000) package sources
we maintain at work - is in libtool.m4.
I think we can safely drop AC_TRY_EVAL without too much ceremony, although
we'll need something (better!) for Automake and Libtool to use instead, as
you say.
