I "clarified" this with my current understanding.
Really I'm not certain this restriction makes sense.

I'm not going to check this in.  I agree with your idea here, but
first it makes the node too small and second it doesn't reflect all
the cases.  Much of the manual still needs a rewrite :-(.  I'd rather
do that systematically than piecemeal.
