They're now obsolete.  POSIX 1003.2-1992 marked them as "obsolescent",
and warned application writers to stop using them.  POSIX 1003.1-2001
removed them.  I guess they figured that 9 years' worth of "please
eat your broccoli" warnings was enough.

You're feeling old too?  I recently dug out my Unix Version 7 manuals
to answer a question about "diff".  I had more hair on the top of my
head when I first used "diff".

I think I have it, so I'll check in future minor changes like that.
