GNU bash, version 2.02.1(1)-release (sparc-sun-solaris2.7)
But looking further, I discovered a line set -u in my .bashrc, which
might explain the error (bash is not my login shell on this system, I
use it mainly for *shell*-buffers in emacs).
Removing that set -u also makes the three failing testcases pass.
Ooops.
