I've discovered that the problem is probably in my build environment (rpm);
it runs ``libtoolize --copy --force'' before building the package.

I can reproduce the bug this way:
        tar xjf automake-1.7.2b.tar.bz2
        cd automake-1.7.2b
        libtoolize --copy --force
        ./configure --prefix=/usr
        make
        make TESTS=reqd2.test check

If I do the same, but without the libtoolize command, everything works.

But just in case you wanted to look at the details:

> ./reqd2.test so we can see at which point the test fails?
