Thanks, this helps.  It seems the invocation of gcj fails when
probing for dependency mode in configure.  Unfortunately configure
redirect the output, so it's impossible to see any error message.

I've reduced the code to the attached test case.  Could you
unpack it, run the runme.sh script, and send the output?
