I guess my first question is: did those changes cause a regression,
i.e. does a test fail with those changes but succeed without the
changes?  If so, we should fix them before installing them.

More generally, a port of Automake to FreeBSD would be a good thing,
but it sounds a bit awkward to have you run tests and have me fix
things.  I have easy access to an OpenBSD host: perhaps I should take
a look at porting to that first.  However, to be honest, I'd prefer it
if someone else would come up with the patches and the test time....
