that's easy: add something like

if special-need; then
        AC_SUBST([CXXLD], [cxxhack])
else
        AC_SUBST([CXXLD], ['$(CXX)'])
fi

to configure.ac.

All AC_SUBSTed variables are available in automake genreated makefiles.
And this takes precedence over values which would Automake otherwise
supply.

Does this solve your problem?

Have a nice day,
        Stepan
