Please note that Automake-1.10 is the current release.  Unless your
reports concerning older releases have any relevance to the current
version, or to other, current packages (like Autoconf or m4), there is
little chance that anybody will spend a lot of time on them.

Anyway it would be helpful to see verbose test output for failures. In the
above case, that would be the output of
  cd /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r3/work/automake-1.8.5/tests
  env VERBOSE=yes make -e check TESTS='exdir2.test man2.test transform.test'

for the other releases adjust TESTS to contain the FAILed tests.

The gentoo maintainer(s) of the Automake packages may be interested in the
failures.
