they do not.  autoconf itself probes the shell and changes behavior based on
that.

then it'll detect that and do the right thing

also make sure your dash version is up-to-date.  there have been known issues
with it leading to broken behavior.  you might even have to import patches from
Debian if your distro doesn't include them already.
