I've examined on Solaris8.  configure claims,

while I've installed 0.9.6c.  This was reported on
cfengine-bug before, but still not fixed.  And you
noted flex is recommended on cfengine-help before,
but it also works with lex if '%p 8000' is replace
with '%p 9000' in cflex.l.  I think someone will
still tries to use lex, and it's trivial to modify.
If not recommended, configure should claim that.
