common c++ 1.6.0

Hello all, 

When compiling the library with MSVC++ 6.0 I'm getting a ton of errors.
Some are from a reported bug in MSVC++ and those have been resolved.

Alas i still have errors. Before I paste error messages to the mailing
list, I was curious if anyone has compiled the library using MSVC++ 5.0 or
6.0 and could give some tips/hints.
