I know I have nothing which would break with this change, but I cannot say if 
others do or don't.  Maybe we could temporarily add a special configure flag 
to --enable-old-socketservice, with appropriate defines, to build the old 
broken behavior.  At least that way people who depend on the broken behavior, 
if such applications exist, can still build a library with it until they 
migrate the application...
