However, some of that distro patch may be worth adding into the official
distribution.  For example, pristine dircolors currently ignores the COLOR
and OPTIONS keywords for compatibility.  But at least the Mandrake
distribution alters the built-in database compiled into dircolors, as well
as providing /etc/DIR_COLORS, with the lines:

COLOR tty
OPTIONS -b -T 0

They are ignored in the official distro, but Mandrake is obviously patched
to parse them and turn them into the aliases you saw.  This ability to use
dircolors output alone to turn on ls --color=auto seems useful (provided,
of course, that there is also an option to not output aliases, especially
since not all bourne shells recognize alias as a keyword).  It would be
interesting to see what the state of your distro's patch currently is.
