/etc/shadow * and ! meaning

Hi guys,

I was loking at the net about the meaning of the ! and * characters in
the shadow file, but I just get that !! measn taht password hasn't
been set, * ans ! is for locking, but what are the meanings and
differente special characters in the password fiedl in shadow file?

or where can I get that info? (I looked at man page and howtos but no luck)
