Yes, I had built the coreutils myself.  I had built the package with
icc, the Intel C Compiler, version 9.1.044.  When I rebuild with gcc,
no problem occurs.

If you rebuild with ICC, does the problem persist?   If so, could you
try the things that Jim and Bob suggested?   Specifically, sending us
the config.log files and trying "configure --with-included-regex" ?
