Thank you both so very much for your quick and helpful responses
on this.

I plan on informing RedHat (as Bob suggested). I have since tried the
test on other linux and linux-like systems (I am a consultant and
have access to several linux/cygwin systems at client sites) and found
the problem to be fairly common.

So I am now thinking seriously of upgrading my own linux box to a newer
version of linux.
