this is the place for such things, but this topic has come up before and 
rejected (for specific commands).  if you search the mail archives, you'll 
find references to an accepted solution (a helper utility that outputs 
progress bars based on feedback from arbitrary utilities).  while people have 
posted patches for the first (rejected) method, no one has done things for the 
latter method.
