It's a fine argument for not adding an --in-place option.
It could use a --backup option, though.
With 'sponge' existing, Pádraig's post about file replacement[1],
and no further activity of this bug in 7 years, I'm opting to mark it
as "wontfix" and close it. We can always re-open it if needed.
