Indeed it would.  In the case I've encountered, debug_check_log uses the
same expr as sanity.sh but reports no differences.  :-(


Well, that at least eliminates the allergy to `$' as a possible cause. I assume you tested a string as long as your original, e.g.

> expr aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :
 aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

but adjusted for length?

Incidentally, I think if either the pattern or string (I forget which) passed to dotest has an extra space on the end, dotest will report that the strings do not match but debug_check_log will report them identical. I hadn't gotten around to diagnosing the problem exactly and fixing it yet.
