You can change the mode in the repository, but that's only useful if the
data came from a system that doesn't distinguish between text and binary
files. If the originating system *does* distinguish between text and
binary files, then the data in the repository is corrupted and must be
replaced. Since you reported that you were seeing <CR>s on Unix, that
implies that you imported the data on a Windows system and so your
repository files now contain <CR>s that shouldn't be there.

You should be getting <CR>s on Linux, too. Perhaps the tools you're
using on Linux just hide the <CR>s from you so you don't notice them.
