If all you need is copying in reverse mode you could also just use dd_rescue in reverse-mode for that

How it is that, after asking it for months, no one noticed that reverse mode was implemented in ddrescue 1.14[1][2]? And it keeps all the good features of forward mode (multiple passes, retries, etc).

* The new option "-R, --reverse", which reverses direction of copy operations, has been added.
