I'm ashamed to announce that a bug has been found in ddrescue 1.18-pre8. Please, don't use it. AFAIK, version 1.18-pre7 is safe to use.
The bug is located in rescuebook.cc (Rescuebook::copy_and_update2), and can sometimes mark a bad sector as finished when reading backwards. 

I'll release a corrected version as soon as possible.
