I think Photorec usually comes with Testdisk, so maybe it wasn't
mentioned specifically? (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photorec or
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data_recovery_software )
And, as far as I understand it, I think ddrescue is often used before
other recovery software because it tries to get "all" data from a
physically damaged drive/cd (which might become worse after each read)
to make a drive/cd image (so as not to keep messing with the damaged
source) and then Photorec or other software can search that image for
stuff to recover as files, etc.

I don't have much experience with CDs, but I'm very glad to hear that
it worked out! :)
