I don't think upgrading to 1.22 will help you. I suppose you want to recover all the data, and most probably the new features of 1.22 won't help you to do it significantly better than 1.21.

This shows: "Copying non-tried blocks... Pass 1 (backwards)".

Why are you running ddrescue in reverse mode (backwards)? Reverse mode is usually slower.

What command line are you using to invoke ddrescue?
May you compress and send me the mapfile? This will allow me to see the distribution of errors in the volume.
