It is irrational to expect all users to be computer scientists.
They're not.  There is no reason they should have to worry about it.

    the meaning of [string].

There's no way to avoid the brackets (or some special characters) for
optional cases.  But it can be avoided for simple nonterminals, and so
it should be, in user-oriented help messages and text anyway.  The less
special syntax, the better.
