This has been alredy reported several times (see this thread http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-ed/2008-04/msg00008.html), and given the number of patches tried I think it is an aliasing related bug of gcc on some non-mainstream architectures (pentium-m, alpha, sparc).

I guess I'll have to try something more radical. Please, stay tuned.
