For the record, the version of ed(1) distributed with Mac OS X is essentially
the same as the *BSD version. It is POSIX compliant, but not fully SUSv3
compliant. It is standard ed and works fine.
Last I checked, the current GNU version of ed(1) was critically broken.
(Disclaimer: I wrote the Mac and the original GNU versions. The SUSv3
compliant version that I offered to GNU was rejected.)
