Having used find + xargs for years, i just stumbled across
locate+updatedb, and I must not be alone, as they seem to have somehow
evaded the GNU kitchen-sink creature-feep.
As a remedy for this dire situation I propose two new enhancements to
updatedb, which is the program which gave me the most trouble:
Basically I'd like to see stronger support for running the
updatedb/locate utilities as a non-superuser. In particular I would
add two new options to updatedb:
1) --foreground I find programs which run in the background and start
spewing their stderr+stdout to my tty to be...disturbing.
2) --no-su There's no reason why updatedb can't run as the current
user.
3) if the argument to --netuser is my userid, infer --no-su.
I'm happy to code this, but I thought I'd run it by the list before
proceeding...
