Obsolete (``basic'') regular expressions differ in several
respects.
`|', `+', and `?' are ordinary characters and there is no
equivalent
for their functionality. The delimiters for bounds are `\{' and
`\}',
with `{' and `}' by themselves ordinary characters.

So I guess \{ \} are part of basic regular expressions?
