Thanks for this, it's great.   I made a small tweak to your patch in
order to support VPATH builds (i.e. where the directory in which
"configure" was run is not $(top_srcdir)).   I attach the updated
version.

I'm running some final checks now, and will shortly merge the change
into master and push it.

We don't need the merge driver any more, I think.      I made a patch
to remove that code.

import-gnulib.sh is simply a sort of historical accident.  At the time
I started using gnulib in findutils, either bootstrap didn't exist,
wasn't generic enough or I didn't know about it (I forget which).
There is no real reason for us not to use bootstrap.
