By the way, you should expect the "lint" target to fail if you happen to
run it. I have a number of patches that I apply to GAWK to get rid of
lint warnings I don't find useful and to change the behavior of some
that I do (https://github.com/ericpruitt/static-unix-userland#patches).
The variable munging happens with or without those patches applied, and
the "git bisect" was done inside of an unmodified clone of the upstream
GAWK repository.
