So is there a way to specify a path for the 'file' or 'dir' commands, when the path includes directories with spaces in their name, that will work when executed from my .gdbinit file? Also why is there even a difference between what works when typed at the gdb prompt and what works when read from the .gdbinit file?
FYI, the form you're using should work in both the .gdbinit and on the command line. Yes, you've found a bug.
Could I suggest capturing your analysis (pretty good) as a bug report http://sources.redhat.com/gdb/#bugs. If you find the bug, even better!
