Setting breakpoints inside library functions

Hello ,
I am using gdb-5.2.1-2mdk (on Mandrake 9.1) to run the gcc-3.2 compiler for 
the MCORE chip. I am unable to set breakpoints at any of the library 
functions. I wrote a new file and  linked it into an archive file in gcc and 
I wish to set breakpoints at functions in that file. If I do add-symbol-file 
my_file, and then set a breakpoint at my_func inside my_file, gdb reports 
"Error accessing memory at address so-and-so".
Please could you tell me what to do ?
