Hi Roger,
This is not the right place to get help about your flicker problem. I
suggest trying a graphics or X Window forum...
Just one tip though (from a developer with little experience in graphics
programming):

Perhaps the lock up is because your program stopped while holding a
mouse or keyboard grab? I suggest running your app inside a nested X
server, like Xnest or xephyr.
