Cannot find new threads: generic error

hi all,
i am running fedora 12 with the following kernel & gdb:
kernel: 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Dec 9 10:46:22 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
gdb: GNU gdb (GDB) Fedora (7.0-13.fc12)

i am trying to debug a gtkmm-based (c++) application.  so i am running "gdb my_app" and when i type r in the gdb console i get the following message:

[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
Cannot find new threads: generic error

any help will be appreciated.
