sorry for spamming: I just remembered that mo files are not opaque binary files but are mostly text with some binary bytes. So I checked my .mo file and indeed the msgid was compiled as "Please use \n for newlines" (single backslash, so it's a newline) With a quick hack in pybabel's mo file writing I was able to verify that the runtime works okay but msgfmt does not handle '\\n' correctly. fs
