Details:

GNOME uses some soft hyphens in their msgids to workaround some line-breaking
issues. Unfortunately, these characters are invisible in Unicode-conforming
editors without a `msgcat -E` pass.

It would be great to see gettext adding escapes for specific
unprintable/zero-width chars. (A switch that takes char ranges can be even
better customizable-wise... Just saying.)
