Ghostscript on Alpha stalls |

I'm trying to run Ghostscript on an Alpha running Slackware 7.1, but
even running gs with no arguments causes it to stall. An strace shows
that it gets stuck after reading gs_lev2.ps, and it starts taking all
spare CPU cycles. I've tried the Slackware and Redhat binaries of
GS 5.50, as well as compiling 6.01 and 6.50, and all of them exhibit the
same problems.
Any suggestions?
