gs 8.01: ps2pdf big black cloud

With GNU Ghostscript 8.01, under GNU/Linux (Red Hat 9), ps2pdf doesn't
convert some of the figures in the following (complex) document
correctly.

Specifically, Figure 15 on page 7 (the second one down in the first
column, the caption is obscured) is a big black cloud.

A secondary problem appears in figures 9 and 10, on pages 4 and 5. The
lines in the bottom outline are too thick.

I'm also attaching the output as it should appear, which was made by
Adobe Distiller 4.0 (with 3.0 compatibility). The documents have
slightly different text, but the figures are identical. Both were made
from the dvips output.

Pure gs displays all the figures correctly, or close enough.

I apologize that the documents are so large, but when I tried to
extract only certain pages (for example, with psselect 7), ps2pdf
croaked with:
  Error: /undefined in @endspecial
(Even though the @endspecial definition appears to be included in the
result, to my naive eyes.) I am not sure if that part is a bug in
dvips, psselect, or ps2pdf ... anyway ...

Thanks,
karl
