ESSENTIAL COMPETENCY INTERVIEW (ECI)
The Essential Competency Interview (ECI) is a behavioral event type of
interview which has become standardized among the services who currently use
the Constable Selection System interview (most of the larger regional and
municipal forces). If you are successful in an ECI interview, those results
can be used with other services for a period of 1 year year; however, the
individual police services always has the discretion to have the applicant do
the interview again with their service.
If you are unsuccessful in an ECI interview, you are required to wait a period
of three months from the time of the interview before attempting the same
interview again with the original service or another service. If another
service phones you for an interview during your three-month wait, you will be
obligated to tell them the result of your previous interview. At that point,
the service has the discretion to either make you wait the three months, or
conduct a different type of interview for you. If you are unsuccessful in
another ECI after your three month wait, you will be required to wait a period
of six months from the date of the interview before attempting the interview
again with any other service.
Please be aware that upon completion of the ECI, the police service conducting
the interview will indicate on the back of your original Certificate of Results
the date, police service, and contact person for the ECI, as well as the result
of the interview.
