IPNet Information
------------------------------------------------------------
The IPNet is a network for researchers working the area of
Inverse and/or Ill-Posed Problems. The goal is to promote
communication between scientists working in these areas, to
provide a newsletter 'IPNet Digest' for notices and scientific
queries of general interest, and to provide a central database
of up-to-date e-mail addresses and World Wide Web sites of
members.
The organizer of the IPNet and the current editor of the
IPNet Digest is Patricia Lamm of Michigan State University.
The software being used to run the network was written by
Tzu Hsi Pan of Michigan State University.
These e-mail addresses are used as part of the IPNet, with
details on usage to follow:
- address@hidden
--------------------------
address for automated subscribe, unsubscribe,
change of e-mail address, change of other personal
information, membership lists, archive information,
and help. More information is given below.
- address@hidden
-------------------------
address for submissions to the IPNet Digest
- address@hidden
------------------------
address for questions and comments about the IPNet
requiring human intervention. See #3 below.
Information about the IPNet may also be found on the World Wide Web:
----------------------
URL of the World Wide Web site for the IPNet
------------------------------------------------------------
Features of the IPNet:
------------------------------------------------------------
1. The IPNet Digest
----------------
All mail sent to 'address@hidden' will be
considered for inclusion in the IPNet Digest. Those
mail messages thought to be of general interest to the
members of the IPNet will combined in a 'news digest'
format and sent periodically to all members of the IPNet.
Submissions may be edited for length.
2. Joining the IPNet
-----------------
To join the IPNet, send an e-mail message to the address
address@hidden with the following in the body
of the message:
subscribe <e-mail address>
lastname <Your last, or family, name>
firstname <Your firstname>
institution <Your institution>
department <Your department>
url <URL of your World Wide Web home page (optional)>
interests <Brief description of your research interests (optional)>
end
You should supply the information in the brackets < > without
typing the brackets.
Multiple-line research 'interests' are allowed; however the
'interests' field should ALWAYS APPEAR LAST in your subscription
message (immediately preceding the 'end' statement). The subject
line of your message is ignored. See examples in #9 below.
3. Help
----
This help message is obtained by sending mail to
address@hidden with the following in the body
of the message:
help
end
Questions and comments about the IPNet requiring human response
should be mailed to address@hidden
4. Current IPNet membership list
-----------------------------
Send mail to address@hidden with the following
in the body of the message:
who
end
A list will be returned to you with names, institutions, and e-mail
addresses of all current members of the IPNet.
5. Cancelling IPNet Membership
---------------------------
To unsubscribe from the IPNet, send a message to
address@hidden with the following in the
body of the message:
unsubscribe <e-mail address>
end
A message of confirmation will be mailed to the deleted
address and to the address making the unsubscribe request.
See examples in #9 below.
6. Change of e-mail address
------------------------
To change your listed e-mail address, send mail to
address@hidden with the following in the
body of the message:
change <old e-mail address> <new e-mail address>
end
You may also make changes in other personal information, such as
department and/or institution name. In this case, send the
following in the body of the message:
change <old e-mail address> <new e-mail address>
department <new department name>
institution <new institution name>
end
As usual, you should supply the information in the brackets
< > without typing the brackets. See examples in #9 below.
7. Change of personal information
------------------------------
To change personal information (without changing e-mail address),
you should still use the 'change' command as above, but now followed
only by your usual e-mail address. For example, to change
your institution name, send a message to address@hidden
with the following in the body of the message:
change <your usual e-mail address>
institution <new institution name>
end
You should supply the information in the brackets < >
without typing the brackets.
To add information not currently listed for you (such as URL of a
home page, or research interests), you may still use the 'change'
command. In this case, send the following in the body of your
message:
change <your usual e-mail address>
url <URL of your World Wide Web home page>
interests <A brief description of your research interests>
end
See the examples in #9 below.
8. Archived files
--------------
Past editions of the IPNet Digest will be archived and
available via e-mail. If there is sufficient interest,
manuscripts and other files may be offered through the IPNet.
To obtain complete information about the use of archived files,
send a message to the address address@hidden
with the following in the body of the message:
send archive-info
end
or
get archive-info
end
9. Examples
--------
a) An example of how Joe Foobar would subscribe to the IPNet:
To: address@hidden
Subject: anything
subscribe address@hidden
lastname Foobar
firstname Joe
institution University of Southern California
department Mathematics
url http://www.math.usc.edu/~foobar
interests I work in numerical methods for inverse problems
with special interest in tomography and medical imaging
problems.
end
b) An example of how Joe Foobar would unsubscribe to the IPNet:
To: address@hidden
Subject: anything
unsubscribe address@hidden
end
c) Early subscriptions to the IPNet did not include a place to enter the
URL of a home page, a statement of research, or a department. Here's
an example of how Joe Foobar would add (or change) the URL of his WWW
home page and a statement of his research interests, without changing his
e-mail address. In this case, the 'url' and 'interests' fields are
present in the e-mailed request. The 'interests' field should always
be last.
To: address@hidden
Subject: anything
change address@hidden
url http://www.math.usc.edu/~foobar
interests I work in numerical methods for inverse problems
with special interest in tomography and medical imaging
problems.
end
d) An example of how Joe Foobar would change the statement of his
research interests (without changing his e-mail address, or anything
else):
To: address@hidden
Subject: anything
change address@hidden
interests I work in numerical methods for inverse problems
with special interest in image processing problems.
end
e) An example of how Joe Foobar would change both his
e-mail address and institution:
To: address@hidden
Subject: anything
change address@hidden address@hidden
institution Stanford University, Math Department
end
