gs 8.61 on linux (x86_64) compilation step "make so" fails

linux Suse 10.1 amd64(x86_64)
gcc 4.3
normal compilation (./configure;make;make install) is OK
"make so" fails almost at the start:
echogs triggers a segmentation fault
