RMS should be the first to point out that allowing a project to shape
itself would be an important freedom... If it is "mandated" somehow that
the project be an "Encyclopedia" you are already limiting its
contributors. In many ways a library is a much more ambitious
undertaking, with broader scope and potential impact. It appears to me
that most people here want to run with the idea of turning 'gnupedia'
into a free library.

Because Nupedia appears completely free, and already an incredible start
on creating a free encyclopedia, I would suggest that Nupedia become the
official GNU encyclopedia...and we then channel the incredible energy in
'gnupedia' into creating a comprehensive online library, one of the
works of which would be Nupedia itself!

Even outside of a practical "provide useful information" sense, can you
imagine how valuable this would be from a preservation perspective?
People can save their best thoughts and ideas in a concrete form..."for
eternity". We could provide editors as a sort of service to
contributors, who would send them suggestions on how to improve the
article! Rather than being an onerous source of evil, editors suddenly
become a tool you can use to help your work communicate more accurately
and to a broader range of people.
