True. However, many international patent agreements make it insanely
easy to get a patent which is valid in a lot of places. I'm not sure
about the validity of the LZW patent (for example, Canada doesn't
allow patenting of algorithms, AFAIK; if they do, I'm writing more
letters to be MP ;) but many types of US patents are rubber-stamped
into Canadian patents, IIRC.
