An interesting idea about external links:

If we do the internal links like this (only an example)
www.gne.org/articles?uid=123456789

can't we do the links like:

www.gne.org/external?linkid=www.yahoo.com/index.html

and have an intersticial page that says, sort of:

The link you have selected lies beyond the GNE. We are not responsible for its content, etc, etc, yadda yadda

- Return to the article

- Proceed to your link

I think this would be very sensible.

Also. the external links could also be given an ID, like the internal articles, and a script could occasionally check if the external links are broker, redirecting to other pages, or that sort of things. And the script could then email the author, and have him reestablish the correct resource...

Hi, Tom,
We weren't trying to justify including External Links as long as they were
in a separate window. If External Links were OK'ed I was talking about
giving the UI the option of opening them in a separate window or not.

Thanks,
Dan Geiser <address@hidden>

Linking to material external to GNE is never going to
work because of potential violations to the GNU
policy. Regardless of whether or not its a new window
etc it will still make GNE non-free, linking to
material that isnt' free.
