chess 5 upgrade

I am trying to use chess 5 with xboard but xboard seems to
make use of an edit command which chess does not seem to
support any more.

Is this correct? Upgrading to version 5 means I lose
features?


Also, I am even having problems starting from the standard
position. xboard reports checkmate after I make the first
move as white!

This is xboard 4.0.0 which I assume is a reasonable version
to use.

Is this a known configuration issue that I can easily
resolve?
