The "COPYING" file in the distribution gives the licensing
arrangements.

GNU chess is distributed under the GNU general public
license.

See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html for more
details.

I would expect the license will allow you to do what you
describe, although it may place certain obligations on you
to indicate what you have done, and possibly further
obligations if you alter the software.

Please read the "COPYING" file, and the above URL, if you
have further queries I would suggest contacting Stuart
Cracraft directly, who is one of the copyright holders.

You might also consider distributing your own software under
the GPL, or Open Source license.
